Smithfield Road Site Earmarked for Global Supermarket Brand

J-Ross Developments Ltd is pleased to be working with Lidl, one of the leading discount supermarket chains in the country to bring a store to Welshpool in Powys.

J-Ross Developments’ site in Welshpool town centre was once the town’s livestock market. In November 2009 the market was relocated and a Tesco supermarket and petrol station was constructed, with a new Marston’s bar and restaurant being constructed shortly thereafter.

Lidl has proposed a 12,000 sqft store, on land adjoining the Marstons restaurant, with 65 car parking spaces as well as cycle parking. If the proposals are approved the new store will create 40 new jobs in the town.

Lidl recently held a public exhibition in Welshpool which gained huge support from local residents. Speaking at the public consultation Miss Hurst, Acquisitions Manager for Lidl commented “I have been really pleased with people’s reaction so far, I have not met anybody with any concern.”

Lidl is now awaiting approval of its planning application from Powys County Council.  If successful, work on site could start in February 2015, with completion in autumn 2015.

Nick Scott, CEO of J-Ross Developments commented “We are pleased to be working with Lidl on this exciting project” Nick added “We hope that Lidl gets a positive result from its application which will attract further inward investment into Welshpool, generating more jobs and providing shoppers with greater choice and value.”
